For the second year in a row, NIPS is host to a one-day workshop focused on machine learning for the developing world (ML4D). This year’s workshop focuses on achieving sustainable impact within ML4D that can advance both machine learning research and global development objectives. Call for papers is open!
I am very honored to have been awarded the Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant, and I am thrilled by the research it will allow me to pursue.
I am excited to be giving the closing keynote at the Data Science and Machine Learning for Development and Humanitarian Action session at UNESCO Conference Tech4Dev, on June 27. I will also be giving a feature-length version of this talk at EPFL on June 28.
After an awesome 2017 summer at Microsoft Research, where I was mentored by Sumit Basu and collaborated closely with Chris Quirk and Lucy Vanderwende, I am really excited to go back for the summer of 2018! This time I will be in New England working on algorithmic fairness with Adam Kalai.
Our research on Discovery of complex anomalous patterns of sexual violence in El Salvador is one of fifteen data innovation projects featured by UN Women and Global Pulse in the report “Gender equality and big data: Making gender data visible” (pg. 14). The goal of this report is to analyze how data can contribute towards achieving the 5th sustainable development goal: achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
Co-organizing the NIPS 2017 Workshop on Machine Learning for the Developing World (ML4D) was incredibly exciting and inspiring! It was wonderful to see so much passion from speakers and participants alike.

I am excited to be a co-instructor for the Intelligent Systems Architecture course of the Master in IT Architecture at Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia).
